the moth lays the eggs directly into the leaf tissue, and when these hatch the larvae will then munch its way around the cells between the upper and lower layer of the leaf, hence turning everything brown.

Do the grubs crawl up the tree to get to the leaves, and if so, could the same treatment be used as on apple trees, sticky tape round the trunk?
